Legal Wales Conference 2010

The Society's contribution to the Legal Wales Conference in Caernarfon in October 2010 was a great success. The Third Youard Lecture on Welsh social and legal history was delivered by R. Gwynedd Parry of Swansea University and author of a new volume David Hughes Parry: A Jurist in Society, published by the University of Wales Press. He addressed the “three ages” of Welsh legal scholarship within universities in Wales. As well as tracing the history of the subject, the speaker offered some trenchant criticisms of the present system and some thoughts for the future. The support of the Chair of the Session, The Lord Chief Justice Lord Judge, was hugely appreciated and many new subscriptions were received.

A version of the the Youard Lecture was also subsequently presented at a Symposium held at Gregynog, where other speakers were Rachael Jones, who spoke on crime and the Gregynog estate, Catrin Fflur Huws whose topic was the study of law and literature in relation to Welsh culture, and Paul O'Leary who discussed the early history of the Salvation Army and the struggle for control of the streets in Wales. The whole occasion was very enjoyable and led to much stimulating discussion.

Cynhadledd Cymru'r Cyfraith 2010

Yr oedd cyfraniad y Gymdeithas i Gynhadledd Cymru'r Gyfraith yng Nghaernarfon ym Mis Hydref 2010 yn llwyddiant ysgubol. Traddodwyd trydedd Darlith Youard ar hanes cymdeithasol a chyfreithiol Cymru gan R. Gwynedd Parry o Brifysgol Abertawe ac awdur cyfrol newydd o'r enw David Hughes Parry: A Jurist in Society, a gyhoeddwyd gan Wasg Prifysgol Cymru. Ymdriniodd a thair cyfnod ysgolheictod gyfreithiol o fewn Prifysgolion Cymru. Yn ogystal ag olrhain hanes y pwnc, cynigiodd y siaradwr sylwadau treiddgar am y sefyllfa gyfredol ynghyd ag ystyriaethau ar gyfer y dyfodol. Gwerthfawrogwyd cefnogaeth Cadeirydd y Sesiwn ac fe gafwyd sawl aelod newydd i'r Gymdeithas.

Traddodwyd ffurf ar y ddarlith yn ddiweddarach mewn Cynhadledd a gynhaliwyd yn Gregynog, lle cafwyd cyflwyniadau gan Rachael Jones ar drosedd ar ystad Gregynog, Catrin Fflur Huws a drafododd lenyddiaeth a'r gyfraith fel astudiaeth o ddiwylliant Cymreig, a Paul O'Leary ar hanes cynnar Byddin yr Iachawdwriaeth a'r ymgais dros reoli ymddygiad yn strydoedd Nghymru. Cafwyd yn y ddwy gynhadledd achlysuron i'w mwynhau ynghyd â thrafodaeth ysgogol.
