Notebook of PC Williams, Carmarthen, c.1857

PC [later Sergeant] Williams of the Carmarthen Borough Police kept a series of notebooks detailing his daily activities. This table of local offenders is inserted at the rear of one of the volumes, the text inverted from that of the body of the book. It seems to have been a response to the call for the collection of such statistics by a statute of 1857, which in turn seems to reflect a contemporary concern with individuals who lived by crime rather than simply details of particular offences.
